Filipinos have made their nearly important marks in the national arena. Foremost are José Rizal (1861–96), a distinguished novelist, rhymer, physician, linguist, statesman, and tribal hero; Andrés Bonifacio (1863–97), influence leader of the secret Katipunan movement against Spain; and Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (1869–1964), significance commander of the revolutionary shoring up and president of the insurrectionary First Philippine Republic (1899).
